“Ah yes.”

Oakland cop got out his car. Walked the beat. Shadowed him for 5 blocks. He went into convenience stores, beauty shops. “How is everything?” Shook hands. Smiles.

Con: He’s 5 blocks from a car when a call comes in.

Pro: Walked ahead of him. Saw 3 or 4 skeezy types spot the cop and decide to walk the opposite direction.

Foot patrols. How bout that.

I know it’s a flattering pic, but still.
We need to be honest about the fact that the mayor of Oakland was hot.

“I sat down with these people and told them, ‘You want to do your killings? Do it in Oakland. Do it in Richmond. Do it elsewhere. But don’t do killing in San Francisco. It reflects badly on a black mayor.’”
- Former Mayor Willie Brown, on a meeting with S.F. gang leaders.

I could go on, but I won’t.

Half an hour and not a single fucking cab in all of downtown Oakland. God, how I hate this city.

So I'm not SUPER familiar with the Oscar Grant trial... I know that some white dude shot and killed an unarmed black man, in the back. Now, I appreciate your coverage of this(and I know I'm not alone), question is, why were you there at the courthouse, as a spectator and to in some way participate and document history in your own way. Also, what do you think should have happened to the office?

I know this sounds strange, but I don’t have a strong opinion on the verdict. My loathing of Oakland lawlessness and law enforcement officials are both pretty high, so my biases cancel each other out.

I can’t pretend to have an informed opinion on the trial. I haven’t read the court transcripts. That said, from watching the video and reading the press coverage, it struck me as a case of voluntary manslaughter. But I don’t pretend to be more informed than the jury.

It should be made clear that the trial was not held in Oakland, and that the defendant was not an Oakland police officer, but that Oakland was merely the scene of the crime.

Why was I there? I work in downtown Oakland. I was on my way home.

One last thing: Big ups to Tully’s Coffee for being the one business to not insult our intelligence and display a poster in solidarity with Oscar Grant.
